Getting in

The house has two entrances, depending on which floor you're using.

Ground floor Key

Use the key provided to come in through the communal front door.

  1. Communal door
  2. Main lock
  3. Double lock

Leaving: make sure the communal door is fully closed behind you.

Basement Keypad

The basement door uses a keyless smart lock only. Enter your access code on the keypad. If you haven't been sent one yet, please ask for it.

  • Take care with the door: the inside handle is very sensitive.
  • Once inside, double lock the door so children can't open it by accident.
  • There are two more locks inside for safety: a Banham double lock and a latch lock.

[05] The house

House notes

We like to keep things simple. The main request is to look after the marble.

The marble

  • Put a placemat or chopping board under glasses, mugs, pots or anything wet. Even water can mark it, and coffee can stain if it's left.
  • The marble is very absorbent, so wipe up spills straight away.
  • Please keep the marble cleaner to hand and use it as needed.

The kitchen

Help yourself to anything in the kitchen. The only request: please don't open unopened bottles of alcohol. Anything already open, or in the fridge, is absolutely fine.

Shoes & noise

No strict rules, just please be mindful of dirt from shoes, and of noise late at night out of respect for the neighbours.

Pets

Sorry, pets aren't allowed.

[06] The house

Garden & plants

Indoor plants

Very low maintenance: a small amount of water roughly every 10 to 14 days.

Garden plants

May–Sep
Water the pots with the hose every 2–5 days if there's been little rain, more if it's very hot
Oct–Apr
Rarely needed; only after a long dry spell
Planter
The one by the garden table waters itself. If it looks dry, give it some extra water

Furniture & cushions

  • Seat pads and cushions are in the gym, along with a basket of outdoor tableware. Use them freely.
  • Please bring cushions in overnight and whenever you go out for a while. British showers arrive without warning.
  • Close the umbrella when you're not using it, so the plants get enough light.
  • Put everything back in the gym after use so it stays clean and dry for the next guests.

Heating

Each floor has its own boiler and its own Hive thermostat. The thermostat decides when the heating comes on; the radiator valves (TRVs) set how warm each room gets.

Exception
The basement master bedroom runs off the ground floor thermostat

How to use it

  1. Set the temperature on the Hive dial
  2. Keep the radiator valve in the thermostat's room fully open
  3. Turn other rooms' valves down if they're too warm, up if they need more

Tip: to warm one room (the guest bedroom, say), move the thermostat into it for a while, then turn that room's valve down a little once it's comfortable.
